Drug Abuse
Some people are able to use recreational or prescription drugs without ever experiencing negative consequences or addiction. For many others, substance use can cause problems at work, home, school, and in relationships, leaving you feeling isolated, helpless, or ashamed. If you are worried about your own or a friend or family members drug use, it is important to know that help is available. Learning about the nature of drug abuse and addiction — how it develops, what it looks like, and why it can have such a powerful hold will give you a better understanding of the problem and how to best deal with it.
If only we could prevent drug abuse, we had have less problems. People wouldnot become addicted; we had have less people living out on the streets, less problems with family life, less people losing their jobs, and less crime. While it is impossible to prevent everyone from using drugs, there are things we can do to keep ourselves from abusing drugs or alcohol. If we share this knowledge with those closest to us, we may be able to prevent them from doing drugs also.
Preventing or delaying use of psychoactive drugs, alcohol, and tobacco among adolescents is a critical, national public health goal. The simplest and most cost-effective way to lower the human and societal costs of drug abuse is to prevent it in the first place.
Addiction is a complex disease. No single factor can predict who will become addicted to drugs. Addiction is influenced by a tangle of factors involving genes, environment, and age of first use. Recent advances in genetic research have enabled researchers to begin to uncover which genes make a person more vulnerable, which protect a person against addiction, and how genes and environment interact.
Preventing from drug abuse
Take the following steps to help prevent drug abuse in your children:
• Communicate : Talk to your children about the risks of drug use and abuse.
• Listen : Be a good listener when your children talk about peer pressure, and be supportive of their efforts to resist it.
• Set a good example : Don't abuse alcohol or addictive drugs. Children of parents who abuse drugs are at greater risk of drug addiction.
• Strengthen the bond : Work on your relationship with your children. A strong, stable bond between you and your child will reduce your child's risk of using or abusing drugs.
• Avoid high-risk situations : Don't go back to the neighborhood where you used to get your drugs. And stay away from your old drug crowd.
• Get help immediately if you use the drug again : If you start using the drug again, talk to your doctor, your mental health provider or someone else who can help you right away.
• Get help for mental illness : Mental illness and substance abuse often go hand in hand. Those with mental illness often turn to drugs as a way to ease their pain. Those suffering from some form of mental illness such as depression, anxiety, or post traumatic stress disorder should seek the help of a trained professional for treatment, before it leads to substance abuse.
• Look at risk factors : If we are aware of the biological, physical, and environmental risk factors that we possess we will be more likely to overcome them. A history of substance abuse in the family, living in a social setting that glorifies drug abuse, and family life that models drug abuse can all be risk factors.
Prevention is cost-effective. Research has demonstrated that research-based drug abuse prevention programs are cost-effective. Each dollar invested in prevention achieves a savings of up to $7 in areas such as substance abuse treatment and criminal justice system costs, not to mention their wider impact on the trajectory of young lives and their families.
